Issue:
A great deal was being lost in one of the maintenance support areas due to a lack of organization. The disorganization also led to duplication of effort between shifts.
Scope:
Conduct a 5S event of the entire maintenance work area. Improve tables and work tools as time permits. The 5S score should be a minimum of 35 (on a scale of 0 to 50) at the completion of the event.
Approach:
The maintenance team for the area received 5S training. The entire area was 5S’d in a period of four (4) days. Point of use storage was established wherever possible.
Results:
The pre 5S audit yielded a score of 12 out of 50. The post 5S score was 39 out of 50. Most of the deficiencies
were related to standard work that the team is to have updated within two (2) weeks. Walls were painted, new lighting
installed, work tables built, old equipment removed, cabinets reorganized and paperwork upgraded. Workers are much
happier with the new area and now have more to spend on the shop floor – their value added work zone.
