Chemical Compliance & Management

To understand compliance activities involved in the chemical related processes, every company must determine where potential chemical hazards exist. To facilitate this process, you must follow regulatory guidelines that start with the initial ordering of the chemical from a supplier.

The person ordering chemicals must be trained under 49 CFR part 172.700, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) regulations on hazardous materials. Once the chemical arrives on-site OSHA takes over. OSHA requires that a Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) be onsite and available to all employees for chemicals that may be endangered by exposure to the material.

Every employee that may come into contact with the chemical and the person responsible for acquiring the MSDS must be trained according to 29 CFR 1910.1200, the Hazard Communication Standard.

Working in a Laboratory requires further training through OSHA’s Chemical Industrial Hygiene Training 29 CFR 1910.1450 and finally to dispose of chemicals properly, the Environmental Waste Management Training is required under 40 CFR 262 (RCRA).
