Management Courses
1/2 Day Basic Management — Time Management
Do you ever look at the clock and wonder where the time went? Then you realize that there are not enough hours in the day to finish the multiple tasks you have to get done before you go home. Don’t get robbed of time you can’t get back. You will learn practical tricks of the trade you can start practicing as soon as you get back to your office.
1/2 Day Basic Management — Communications
Nobody will be surprised to hear that you have said something that you regretted but it was too late. Communication styles track closely to your personality type. Find out what you specifically may be able to do to convey your messages more effectively. Let us stir up your habits and even your company culture and show you how you can reconstruct it and convey your messages more productively.
Driver Hiring, Screening, and Retention
90% of all accidents are caused by driver error. Don’t hire your next accident! Finding qualified drivers is every transportation company’s major challenge. We may not be able to find the driver for you but this seminar will help you set the appropriate standards, reinforce your screening techniques, and once hired, help you to keep the driver longer. Each driver hired costs you over $5000—don’t waste your investment.
1/2 Day Hours of Service Seminar
Learn the basics of the DOT’s restrictions on a drivers driving time. Recent changes have severely restricted the split break. What exceptions can your company utilize? Learn how to prepare and manage the driver’s log. Designed for admin, drivers, and management.
Hours of Service (Log) Audit
Management will be held responsible for errors made by the driver even if you weren’t aware of the violation. In some cases, managers can even be charged with “aiding and abetting the violation” if you don’t have control of this critical safety area. Some studies have shown that fatigue is a contributing factor in as many as 50% of all accidents. Even though you cannot ride with the driver, you can reconstruct his life if you know how to read and interpret what he/she told you on his/her logs. During this seminar you will be converted to drivers for a trip and be asked to do the logs. Then we will audit actual logs for three different type of violations. Arm yourself with every tool possible to get control of hours of service violations.
Risk Control and Investigations
After we look at what an accident actually costs, there will be plenty of motivation to stop them without even considering the possibility someone has been hurt. The primary goal of the safety professional is to stop all accidents. This is an admirable objective but in reality, accidents happen even in a perfectly managed operation. There is much that can be done to prevent the accident but once it occurs we cannot let it be repeated! By gathering and investigating every detail of an accident scenario we can identify the root cause. Let us give you some ideas that you can implement right away before the next accident.
Vehicle Maintenance
“Every motor carrier shall systematically inspect, repair, and maintain, or cause to be maintained, all motor vehicles subject to its control.” (§396.3) This seminar is designed for both management and mechanics. Maintenance files are more complicated then any other files in the DOTs requirements. There are four different files, all with different retention requirements. Quite often the best technically sound shop has the worst record keeping skills. If it isn’t documented properly, it did not get done. During this class we will focus on the DOT’s maintenance regulations and the corresponding records but will also actually conduct a CVSA Level 1 roadside inspection and point out specific out-of-sevice scenarios.

DOT Courses
DOT Audit Success
This seminar is almost entirely hands on. We will conduct a simulated compliance review using documents representing forms our Optima auditors have actually seen in our work with clients. The goal obviously will be to prepare you to go back and conduct your own internal audit before the DOT does. Don’t get surprised...get your system ready for the coveted Satisfactory rating. To get the most out of this class we suggest that you attend the Motor Carrier Safety Seminar first.
Advanced DOT Workshop
Now that you’ve had time to become generally competent with the DOT regulations and procedures, let us take you to the next level. With over 70 years of experience in the industry and 30 years as DOT consultants, John and Jeff will show you a deeper view of Motor Carrier Safety. Search SafeStat statistics and reduce your scores. Learn how to write that policy to say what you need it to say. Establish control over all aspects of compliance. Since this is a workshop we will roll up our sleeves and do it more than just talk. Guest speakers will add the real word touch.

Forklift Courses
Forklift Train the Trainer
Every person who touches the wheel of a powered lift truck (i.e. forklift) must be trained and competency tested. This course will get you ready and provide you with materials to do it yourself.

Safety Courses
Safety Professional Foundations
The school of hard knocks gives you your test before the training. Not good and very costly. Let us help you with the basics of safety. Learn what it means to be a safety professional. What is your mod rate and what does that mean? Learn accident control and tracking procedures. Workers comp lessons learned by hundreds of managers before you will be shared. Learn from others’ mistakes before you get the hard knock. “Must-know” basic OHSA is in the outline.
Motor Carrier Safety Seminar
A must for every transportation professional. Find out what you are personally and professionally required to know and do. We’ll cover the Federal motor Carrier Safety Regulations and applicable Wisconsin laws. Watch for the Advanced DOT in November. If you can only go to one seminar this year—this is the one.

Hazardous Materials Courses
Hazardous Materials
The DOT requires every employee who has anything to do with the transportation of HM (warehouse, shipping, clerical, management, drivers, etc.) to be trained and tested every three years. This class must cover general awareness (classification, packaging, marking, labeling, shipping papers, placards), function specific, safety, and security plans. Later in the year (October) we will add the air transportation requirements with this class. Learn how to set up your HM procedures and write your security plan.
Hazardous materials and IATA
Fines for hazardous materials violations on aircraft can be assessed at 10 times as high as those on the ground. Since international HM (Dangerous Goods) regulations were the source to our domestic laws they are similar enough to cover during the same class. In the process of covering the general HM procedures we will direct our attention to both the U.S. Hazardous Materials Regulations as well as the International Air Transport Association’s Dangerous Goods Regulations. We will point out the unique differences found between the regulations. This seminar will meet both the U.S. and IATA training mandates.

ACE Courses
ACE Defensive Driving
Everybody needs a periodic driving skills refresher, especially professionals who face hundreds of life threatening hazards every day. We are hopeful that this course will significantly reduce your accidents but if it does not...in court, wouldn’t you rather tell the jury that you at least prepared your drivers to the best of your abilities. Drivers will be challenged both in the classroom and behind the wheel by two of the best drivers in the business.

A&D Courses
1/2 Day Alcohol and Drug Supervisory
The DOT’s A&D testing procedures require that every person who “is designated to supervise drivers” be trained in reasonable suspicion indicators. This class will present the 2 hour mandate. We will start off with a review of the A&D requirements in case procedures have slipped over the years. The DOT tends to be extremely particular about these requirements.
